Books I haven’t read, and won’t

People say “life’s too short” to refer to numerous things they choose not to do. Life’s too short to …. just fill in the blank with whatever you think is a waste of your time. For me, life’s too short to read bad books.

I never did read the Twilight series, even though many of my freshmen girls urged me to. I think that fad is dying out now, and I don’t regret my decision. Aside from young teen fans, no adult I know said “You’ve got to read these books.”

I also don’t think there is time in my life to read fifty shades of anything. The gimmick is that I can read an otherwise potentially embarrassing book on my Kindle and no one will know.

But I want people to know. I want them to see me reading Eliot’s Middlemarch, a book that is completely worthy of my time, a book that does enrich my mind and challenge it simultaneously.I want someone to casually ask, “Is that a good book?”I will enjoy telling them all about it.

There are far too many important books in the world to spend one moment on something not worthy to be read. I know that not everyone is going to agree on what constitutes worthy, but I have spent time thinking a great deal about that and feel confident in my criteria.

My only regret with regard to reading is that life truly is too short to read everything I wish I could read or reread.
